A Letter to the Father Who Judged My Son......
Let me start this off by saying, I understand. You want nothing but the best for your child.
What parent doesn’t, right?
Although I think I understand your intentions....
Please understand I am still his mom and this mama bear is not happy.
When my son initially shared the information with me, I wanted to call you right away and give you a piece of my mind.
You upset me so much I actually started the process of finding you. I heard you are a police officer.
I have a couple of comments here, but I am going to do my best to keep those to myself.
I asked the SRO officer at my school if he knew of you... he didn't.
Please understand, I am not one of those crazy, redneck women you hear about.
However, I am one of those individuals who wants to help others understand when they have made a moron out of themselves, so hopefully they can do better the next time.
So, let's get started.....
From my understanding, your rationale for not allowing your daughter to date my son was because he has tattoos and he rides a motorcycle.
I guess I should be extremely thankful it wasn't because he has an arrest record, engages in substance abuse, and has 3 different kiddos with 3 different baby mamas.
But really?!?
I guess it just was not what I expected.
I think this is why it bothers me so.
One of my favorite quotes comes from a famous speech, I have a Dream.
The short and sweet is Dr. Martin Luther King had a dream that one day man would be judged by the content of their character as oppose to the color of their skin.
Well.... as an Ink Lover.... I would like to piggy back on his totally awesome dream only to add the following phrase.... or the ink on their skin.
I do not owe you an explanation, but if the opportunity to speak face to face would have happened, this what I would have said.
I am sorry you could not look beyond the surface to see what an awesome young man my son is.
He is a survivor of an experience no child should have to endure. One of his tattoos represents a connection shared between the both of us. A tattoo which is also on my skin and I will forever cherish its meaning.
Since you did not take the initiative to try to understand the meaning behind the other tattoos, I can only speculate you do not care, so I won't waste my time sharing the meaning behind the rest.
Just please know it might be with the stepping outside your comfort zone next time; as the young man before you might be the one God has chosen for your daughter.
I would not want to mess with his plan over something so simple as a ... tattoo. #justsaying
If I understood correctly, the second area of concern was he rode motorcycles.
Why yes he does!!
Not just any motorcycle~ a Harley Davidson.
I only brag because anyone who knows motorcycles would understand the ability to purchase a Harley Davidson Motorcycle is not something that most 19 year old young men are able to do.
Some grown men simply cannot find the means of working a Harley Davidson Motorcycle into their budget.
I want to fill you in on more~ this will be the second motorcycle he has purchased.
The Jeep he drives; it is one of two. The first jeep he owns.
It might be a good time for me to clarify this mommy and daddy did not purchase or make any payments on either of these vehicles.
You see my son works full time and is currently taking classes to better himself.
You would know this if you could have looked past the tattoos and the motorcycle.
You would also have learned about his character.
I am beyond proud to say my son is very respectful... to everyone; even those who may not deserve respect.
He is giving. He will help anyone if he can.
He is forgiving~ this is a blog for another day, but if you only knew his ability to turn the other cheek and forgive.
He tries to see the best in others; even when the best is hard to see
He is patient. Right now he is waiting on God to show him the right girl.
If you can, try to think back to when you were growing up and looking for that "one"... it's not an easy task.
I would love to say thank you for making this easier, but.... we will let that go for now.....
He is such a gentle soul. I do not think he could purposefully hurt anyone or anything.
He is funny~ sometimes he thinks he is funnier than he is, but overall he is pretty funny
I have watched him with young ladies. He isn't your typical young man. I am confident the feelings are there, but he chooses not to let those dominant his actions.
Although I have a lot more I would like to tell you about my son, at this point, I am confident I have spent more time thinking about your actions than you did on considering how my son might be a nice date for your daughter.
If you take anything away from this letter, please consider the character of the next man your daughter brings home instead of dwelling on the outward appearance.. and vehicle he drives.
Sincerely,
His mom and one disappointed Mama Bear
